2 important things (and a funny video)

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

IMPORTANT THING #1: Ok, first of all I really want to apologize that it took me so long to get the winners of the Creating Simple Solos contest announced. But I’ve been super-busy slaving away on my new acoustic guitar course (coming soon!). Here are the winners…

Steve Mowat
Wade Munson
Paul Marshall

IMPORTANT THING #2: I’ve got a new course coming out soon… Acoustic Guitar Mastery. It’s a big, multi-DVD course that’s 100% about acoustic guitar. I’m going to give you several videos from the course so you can learn a lot even if you decide it’s not for you. So stay tuned!

Lastly, here’s a funny video I found on YouTube. I call it the “Bad Day Cure” video. So, keep it handy. If you’re having a bad day, just watch this and it’s almost guaranteed to get better. :-)

Two-note solo trick (video)

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

We’re only about 11 days from the public release of my new course, Creating Simple Solos. It’s all about YOU learning to crank out killer solos using simple, easy-to-play licks and riffs. Unlike my Lead Guitar Secrets course (which is currently off the market) I do NOT go into a ton of theory in this course. The most important thing is to get you playing lead right from the start!

In this video I explain what I’m doing and then demonstrate how to play it over the jam track at about three minutes into it. Check it out…

How to solo with 5 notes!

A few months ago I was playing around with some solo ideas… just jamming over some backing tracks. I was trying to come up with something “new.” I’d been stuck in a rut for while and I needed something to get my creative juices flowing. So, I popped in a jam track and start just playing scales…

I didn’t try to do anything fancy. I just played scales and then tried to create a few licks. And here’s the BIG “Ah-Ha!”…

I didn’t try to IMPRESS anyone. (Not even myself). I wasn’t trying to be “cool” and show off. I wasn’t the “guitar-guru” teacher. I was just playing for ME. I was enjoying playing. I was just having fun.

And something happened…

I realized that I was playing these sweet little licks that sounded great. I mean, it wasn’t like you would have said, “WOW!” or anything. It was just cool to play a few licks that really added to the music.

And the most important part? I was having a BLAST!

BUT, I began to wonder if it was just a “fluke” or if I’d stumbled upon a real technique for creating solos. So, I changed the jam track to another song. And I started the whole process over again. I found that right scale and then tried to create a nice sounding lick with just a three or four notes. Once it started sounding good, I tried to expand it a little to turn it into a full-blown solo. And it worked!

nullSo, I called up my camera guy and said, “Dude, I think I’m on to something. We need to video tape this stuff!” So, he grabbed his gear and headed over to my house. Three hours later, we had the whole thing on tape! It was amazing how easy it all just “flowed.”

Anyway, I’ve packaged up all these videos into to course called, Creating Simple Solos. I didn’t think there was any way we would be able to get it released this year. But I just got off the phone with our DVD company and it looks like we’re going to be able to have it ready in next month — December!

In fact, the printer just sent me the proofs for the course. Here’s what the DVD cover looks like. Sweet huh?

So, it looks like this course will be ready before Christmas. You might want to let Santa know that you’ve been good this year. :-)

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video, please post your comment below, I want to hear from you!

Cheers,

Dan Denley

P.S. The new site will be here (eventually).
