Hoppin’ Juke Joint: Dominant 9th Chords!

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Here’s a new lesson from Acoustic Guitar Secrets. This one comes from DVD1. It’s a song called, “Hoppin’ Juke Joint”.

Key concepts:

  1. Common syncopated rhythmic pattern (see meas. 1-4, 7-10)
  2. Use of open-position, E7
  3. Use of dominant9th chords (C#9, B9)
  4. Domiant 7th barre-chords with root on 6th string (A7, B7)
  5. Common turnaround: V/II (C#9) - II (F#7#5) - V (B9) - I (E7)
  6. Use of altered dominant (F#7#5). Altered dominant is any dominant 7th chord that has the 5th (either augmented or diminished) of 9th (flat or sharp) altered.

Hope you enjoy! Please post your comments and questions.
