Hoppin’ Juke Joint: Dominant 9th Chords!
Here’s a new lesson from Acoustic Guitar Secrets. This one comes from DVD1. It’s a song called, “Hoppin’ Juke Joint”.
Key concepts:
- Common syncopated rhythmic pattern (see meas. 1-4, 7-10)
- Use of open-position, E7
- Use of dominant9th chords (C#9, B9)
- Domiant 7th barre-chords with root on 6th string (A7, B7)
- Common turnaround: V/II (C#9) - II (F#7#5) - V (B9) - I (E7)
- Use of altered dominant (F#7#5). Altered dominant is any dominant 7th chord that has the 5th (either augmented or diminished) of 9th (flat or sharp) altered.
Hope you enjoy! Please post your comments and questions.

I was Kicked over from the theory lesson you just emailed out to those on your mailing list or the have purchased one of your products list - very well done and I’m almost to where I can understand that sort of thing. At least my eyes don’t glaze over as badly as they once did.

Really It’s much useful to me. I’m learning guitar more than 1 year. Im having problem with strumming while shifting the chords but the lesson shows the easy way for it. hope I can be good guitarist one day.
