Hi Fellow Guitar-Lovers,
Hope all is well. I’m about to head out to my favorite Mexican dive to grab some tamales, so I’ll make this snappy…
Today’s lead guitar lick comes directly from the 2nd position, A minor pentatonic scale. The pentatonic scale has five total positions (because there are five notes). And this particular lick comes from the 2nd of those five movable positions.
This lick sounds great over any chords from A minor scale:
Am, Bm (or B dim), C, Dm, Em, F, G. It would also sound good over a I-IV-V blues progression like A7, D7, E7.
You’ll notice in the notation that I’ve indicated an A7 chord for the rhythm guitar part. This would be fine, but you can also use any of the chords from the key of A that I mentioned above. The reason is because all the notes from this lick come from the key of A.

Well I purchase the coarse even though I’m far from being well off myself. However, I sure would like to win that guitar. Bet my learning would sound much better on it than the piece of pine bark with elastic bands stretched over it that I play now.

just fyi… the chords you listed aren’t an A major scale, you listed the chords for C major.
the chords in the A major scale would be:
A Bm C#m D E F#m G#m(G#dim)

Oops! Yeah, you’re right. I meant to say “A minor” (the relative minor of C major). I fixed it now. Thanks for pointing that out!
