Hello my friend! Have you ever heard of “modes?” …

Friday, January 13th, 2006

Hello my friend!

Have you ever heard of “modes?” Well, modes are simply variations of the major scale. They are essentially the same notes of any given major scale — except the notes are rearranged.

There are 7 different modes and each can be classified as major, minor or diminished:

  1. Ionian (major)
  2. Dorian (minor)
  3. Phrygian (minor)
  4. Lydian (major)
  5. Mixolydian (major)
  6. Aeolian (minor)
  7. Locrian (diminished)

I’ve created a 7-part series for you to help you understand what modes are, how to play them and how to apply them in your everyday playing.

Each lesson takes one of the seven modes and explores it in detail. And each lesson contains three different parts:

  1. A downloadable .pdf file. This file will give the movable pattern for each mode AND the tablature.
  2. A downloadable .mp3 file. This is your “jam track” where I play rhythm guitar for you and you will play the solo part using your newly-discovered mode!
  3. A video tutorial. This is a video tutorial where I take you by-the-hand and give you the nitty-gritty details about each mode.

Make sure that you watch the video tutorial before you just dive into playing the mode or listening to the .mp3 file.

I hope you enjoy this 7-part series as much as I enjoyed creating it for you…

All the best to you and your guitar playing!

Cheers,

Dan Denley
