I have a cheap fender strat squier.... I need to upgrade to something much better. I want to spend between $300-700. Whats the best choice for this money? If i could get a much better guitar for $1,000, I would be willing to consider spending that much. Thank you.

I also play a cheap squier for 300.00 you could put some good noiseless pickups and a better bridge system with rollerballs to guide the strings, this will improve the quality enough.

I agree les paul are good value. However, it depends on what you expect. If you've been playing professionally for 50 years, you will have a different expectation to a beginner (however you wouldn't be asking this question here). Most likely you are a beginner, so this would be a good choice. You mention up to $1,000 - depends on what dollars you mean - Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, US. If you are a beginner you probably need spend no more than about AUD$500 (US$450).

Jimmy, Check out Dean guitars. I own a Gibson SG, and bought, a Dean Dime Shadow, that I just can't put down. $599.00 Billyb.

PRS SE line. Look at a Custom or Singlecut. Consider e-bay. I have an SE with a Duncan SH-4 bridge pickup. My Squire is nevery played anymore. GASing for a US made PRS, but the difference between a Squire and a PRS SE is HUGE, while perceved SE to US PRS difference is mostly due to GAS!

I don't agree with the advice suggesting the les paul series. In my view, it is grossly over proced eeven at current reduced prices and the Les paul Studio I have is just too heavy unless you have a huge stomach to rest it upon. I have seven guitars and my favorite guitar is the PRS SE Custom hollowbody that sells for about $700 US.

I was at a large guitar show recently, and played about every single guitar there in this price range (and some above!). There were literally hundreds. I came out with the view that Fender Strat, and Les Paul are both over rated and over priced. The PRS SE Custom series however sang like an Angel, I had never heard of them before and was so impressed I bought an SE Custom semi hollow on the spot, and, darn it, it cost more! That said, I'm sure my next guitar will be a Les Paul
![]() As for the amp - British Company Orange Crush. Beats line 6 Spider by miles. |
