I'm always asked if I can recommend gear.
I play a Tom Anderson, ProAm. Tom (and crew) hand build guitars in their factory in California. You really can't go wrong with his guitars. The are NOT cheap. Expect to spend $1,500+. Of course you can't go wrong with a Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul. They rock! Cheers, Dan |

hi dan
could you tell me what you think of an Epiphone Les Paul Special II. i don't have the possibility to spend more than 250$ for a guitar. i like accoustic a lot but i love the effects possible with an electric. I would like to play blues and rock and country music. what do you think, what do you recommend. thanks benm |

I feed it into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp for a very clean sound, then dirty it from there as needed using pedals. |

Hi, I am new to this forum, and waiting for my Blues Guitar Secrets 2.0 course.
While I wait I am surfing around looking at guitars and prices. I am not a man of wealth, so I can't spend much. My local (45 miles to nearest town) music store has the Epiphone Les Paul clone Special II for $250. Anyhow, I am using a used and old, made in Japan, Squiere Bullet. How does it match up to the Epi? Hello, nice to be a part of Dan's extended family. Chappy (Steven) |

If this is a genuine Epiphone in good condition you should be happy with it. Whate do you man "clone". Does that mean it's a cheap copy of an Epiphone (Gibson)? |

What I meant was that the Epiphone, (a real one if the Special II is a real one) is a clone of a Les Paul. IE;Humbuckers and the body and head style. Thanks again, Steven/Chappy PS. I know the owner pretty well and can likely get some amount kicked off the price. He asked me if I was keeping the Squiere or wanting to trade it in. On $250 I do not see they could give me anywhere's near the value of the Squire as a trade in. Thoughts? |

Chappy,
From what I know (I own both Epiphone LP and Gibson LP), both guitar and price are good. Suggest you play and inspect the guitar. Check it particularly from 12th fret upwards and make sure all notes work, and for rattles ( other frets touching the strings when one is pressed), and action not too high. Check that both pickups work ok (selector switch). Checj tensioners move freely and evenly when rotated |

Well, I went and got me one of these guitars a few days ago. I paid nada because I traded in a guitar I actually had forgotten about I had (been sitting since the band died about 8 years ago). Consdering this, I figure the straight trade was a deal. They threw in
some strings and a nice strap. Oh, for those who have seen these guitars online, I got the white one. I have seen the Epiphone Special II Les Paul on sale on the net for $169 plus shipping. Silly part is that I live in Canada and even tho the CDN and US dollars are close to even, anyhting I order from the states wants 10-20% exchange (in their favor). Regardless, I wasn't about to buy one w/o playing it, so I spent at least half an hour at the store with the Epi on my lap, plugged into an amp similar to my own. It sounded and felt fine to me there, and does at home. I used to own a Gibson made Les Paul worth 5 times the price, but finances ended that. The new one looks similar and sounds great. My only thought is that someday (like when I finish my Lead Guitar Secrets 2.0 course) I will put in better Humbuckers. This one has Humbuckers of some sort, but I figure putting in some "real" ones should be about all I can do for it, and I may find I don't even need that. One other thing, I saw right away that this guitar was made in Indonesia. So I stared looking at the $900 Epiphone Les Paul styles, and they were all made in China or Indonesia. I then looked at the $1200 one I could reach and it was made in China. I know we scoff at these Asian made guitars, but they are mostly put together from a kit, I figure. So if the "maker" can follow instructions and the seller can set the guitar up, it's as good as you'll get unless you find something on Ebay. But as stated by others and myself, don't buy a guitar w/o playing it. Unless you are a Luthier. (SP?) Yada yada, God bless, Steven (aka Chappy) |
